The 36-year-old beat Daniil Medvedev 6-3 7-6 6-3 to claim his fourth US Open crown. Despite winning in straight sets, the Serb was forced to work hard for his victory which included a marathon 104-minute second set.
Djokovic now becomes the oldest US Open champion in the open era. He also extends his record as World No 1 for 390 weeks. He is now the first man to have won three Grand Slams in a year on four separate occasions.
In the woman’s draw, home favourite Cocoa Gauff claimed her maiden Grand Slam beating Aryna Sabalenka. The 19-year-old American came back from losing the first set to emerge victorious 2-6 6-3 6-2.
The American will now rise to no 3 in the world rankings – a career high.
As the final Grand Slam of the year draws to a close all eyes will be on the Australian Open which starts in January.
