Djokovic through in Paris as Nadal loses

Defending Champion Novak Djokovic won his first round match against Pierre-Hugues Herbert 6-4 7-6 (7-3) 6-4 at the French Open. The 24-time Grand Slam Champion has not won a title in 2024 and his world No.1 status is under threat by Italian Jannik Sinner. After winning his first major trophy at the Australian Open in January Sinner is closing in on the top spot.

There was disappointment for 14-time Champion Rafael Nadal who lost to Alexander Zverev in straight sets 6-3 7-6 (7-5) 6-3. It was an emotional farewell for Nadal who has become synonymous with Roland Garros during his illustrious career.

Many people in the crowd were in tears as the great Spaniard took a final bow on the Filippe Chatrier court. It was only his fourth defeat at Roland Garros in 116 matches. The match is expected to be his final appearance at the French Open.

Wimbledon Champion Carlos Alcaraz came through a rather surprising against qualifier Jesper de Long in his opening round match. The Spaniard eventually managed to overcome the Dutchman 6-3 6-4 2-6 6-2. Alcaraz has been in mixed form this year and will be looking to secure his first Grand Slam of 2024 at Roland Garros.
