Raducanu crashes out of the US Open as Dan Evans makes history

Emma Raducanu suffered defeat in the opening round of the US Open in New York on Monday. The 2021 Champion was beaten in three sets by Sofia Kenin 6-1 3-6 6-4.

A tearful Raducanu was visibly disappointed with the loss. She missed the Olympic Games in Paris to concentrate on the US Open. The 21-year-old said she now intends to play more matches in an attempt to regain her form after only playing in one competition since Wimbledon in July.

In the men’s draw Britain’s Dan Evans made US Open history winning the longest match ever played at the event. Evans produced a remarkable comeback to overcome Russian Karen Khachanov 6-7 (6-8) 7-6 (7-2) 7-6 (7-4) 6-4.

The match lasted five hours and 35 minutes which is the longer contest in US Open history. Evans was 4-0 behind in the deciding set and amazingly won six games in a row to claim victory.

Both players received a deserved standing ovation from the Flushing Meadows crowd at the end of the match.
