Australian Open begins in Melbourne

The first Grand Slam of 2025 is underway in Melbourne. It is the first opportunity the players will have to secure a major victory in the sport.

Defending Men’s Champion Jannik Sinner is among the favourites to claim the crown. The Italian World No.1 collected two major trophies in 2024 and is expected to go close again this year.

24-time Grand Slam Champion Novak Djokovic is in the twilight of his career but is hoping to add to his incredible major haul. The 37-year-old has employed former rival Andy Murray as his coach. The pair shared many battles at the highest level over a 20-year period and it will an interesting dynamic to see them now working together.

Wimbledon Champion Carlos Alcaraz will also be considered a big threat in the tournament. The young Spaniard added the French Open to his All England Club crown in 2024. He will be expected to challenge for the title in Melbourne.

In the woman’s draw Aryna Sabalenka is the defending champion. The 3-time Grand Slam Champion and current World No.1 is recognised among the very best players on the hard court surface.

Iga Swiatek spent many weeks in 2024 at the top of the woman’s rankings and will also be one of the favourites for the title.
