Croatia beat Spain in Davis Cup to set up Australia semi final

Veteran Marin Cilic beat Spain’s Pablo Carreno in three sets to take Croatia into the semi finals of Davis Cup. Spain are the tournament hosts but the partisan crowd we unable to push the home team to victory in Malaga.

34-year old Cilic came back from losing the first set to level the match but then fell behind 4-1 in the deciding set tie break. He was able to recover and finally won the match 5-7 6-3 7-6. His win meant Croatia were in an unassailable lead 2-0 in the tie and therefore did not need to rely on the doubles match.

The Spaniards were missing their star players Carlos Alcaraz & Rafael Nadal. The pair are currently ranked no 1 & 2 in the world respectively and would have undoubtedly brought some additional quality to their team. Alcaraz is currently away from the court due to injury and Nadal is limiting his playing time after recently returning from his own injury problems.

Croatia will be looking to go a step further than last year when they were runners up to Russia in the final in 2021. They will now play Australia in the semi finals on Friday.

Australia have won the David Cup on 28 occasions, with only USA winning the competition more times with 32 titles. However, the Aussies have yet to win the trophy since 2003.

Wimbledon finalist Nick Kyrgios is continuing his absence from the Davis Cup after he opted out of the event. He has not played in the competition since 2019 and would have been a welcome addition to Lleyton Hewitt’s Australia team.
