UK : 020 3904 5599Daniil Medvedev relinquished the World No 1 status after losing in three sets to French veteran Gael Monfils 4-6 6-3 6-1 at the BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells. This was the first time Medvedev was playing in a tournament as World No 1 but will hand it back to Novak Djokovic on Monday after his defeat to 35-year-old Monfils.
Elsewhere, there seems to be no stopping 21-time Grand Slam Champion Rafael Nadel after he beat British No 2 Dan Evan in straight sets 7-5 6-3. The victory extended the Spaniards perfect start to 2022 to an unbeaten run of 17 straight matches. It was also Nadal’s 400th Masters 1000 win to make him the first man to reach this milestone since the series started in 1990.
Nadal also announced this week that he will not play at the Miami Open later this month as he looks to prepare for the French Open. As he approaches his 36th birthday Nadal has decided to be more selective with the tournaments he enters and is naturally focusing on the Grand Slams. The ‘King of Clay’ has won the Open de France an unprecedented 13 times and will be a strong favourite to claim the crown again this year. The tournament takes place in May at Roland Garros.
Nadal has not played at Wimbledon since 2019 when he lost in the semi final to great rival Roger Federer. After such a strong start to 2022 there is a strong possibility we will see the Spaniard on the grass at SW19 this summer.
