UK: 020 3904 5599Tennis great Roger Federer has announced he is to retire from the sport. The 20-time Grand Slam Champion confirmed that the Laver Cup this weekend will be his last ever tournament.
In his glittering career Federer won a staggering eight Wimbledon titles. He also holds the record for the most amount of consecutive Grand Slam final appearances. His incredible run stretched from Wimbledon 2005 to the Australian Open in 2008. Federer won five successive US Open titles between 2004 & 2008. The Swiss great reached the final of all four Grand Slams in 2006, 2007 & 2009. This achievement remains unmatched to this day.
Federer’s first Grand Slam success came at Wimbledon in 2003 when he beat Mark Philippoussis. He went on to dominate the grass court tournaments and won slams in USA & Australia on the hard courts. However, the dominance of Rafael Nadal on the clay in Paris meant he was made to wait before he achieved a career ‘Grand Slam’. Federer finally added a French Open title to his CV in 2009, six years after his maiden major victory.
His appearance at the Laver Cup this weekend had been in doubt due to his recent absence from the court due to injury. However, Federer confirmed he will play at the team event at the O2 Arena in London and announced that it will be his final competition before retiring.
Roger Federer will undoubtedly be remembered as one of the greatest tennis players in history.
