STORBRITANNIEN: 020 3904 5599Lorenzo Musetti beat fellow countryman Matteo Berrettini in an all-Italian final at the Naples Open on Sunday. 20-year-old Musetti is a rising star in the men’s game and the victory over Berrettini was his second tour-level crown.
The first set took 82 minutes to complete which Musetti finally won courtesy of a tie-braker. This gave Musetti confidence going into the second set and he managed to overwhelm Berrittini with clinical tennis and went on to win the match in straight sets 7-6 6-2.
Berrettini had been struggling with a foot injury leading into Sunday’s final and required a medial timeout in his semi-final match against Mackenzie McDonald. He initially seemed to be moving well as both players played out a pulsating first set. However, the younger Musetti took control of the match in the second as Berrettini began to fade physically.
In his speech after the match Musetti acknowledged that his opponent wasn’t 100% fit for the final encounter but nevertheless he will be delighted with claiming another tour title. The victory was made even more impressive as he managed to claim the trophy without dropping a set throughout the entire tournament.
