Medvedev was the defending Champion and current World No 1 and was the favourite heading into the match. However, Kyrgios was able to produce some scintillating tennis which proved to be a extremely entertaining encounter in front of 24,000 people in the Arthur Ashe Stadium.
Kyrgios is yet to win a major tournament but he has been in impressive form recently and will be hoping he can finally claim a maiden Grand Slam. He will now face Russian 27th seed Karen Khachanov for a place in the semi finals.

Meanwhile Serena Williams waved farewell to the sport after losing to Australia’s Ajla Tomlijanovic 7-5 6-7 (4-7) 6-1. Her retirement brings to an end an illustrious 27-year professional career which includes 23 major titles. The former World No 1 received a standing ovation at the end of the match which sparked an emotional reaction from Williams. She will be recognised as one of the greatest female tennis players of all time.
