Draper beats Murray to reach last 16 at Indian Wells

Jack Draper came out on top in the all-British tie at Indian Wells to beat Andy Murray in straight sets 7-6 (8-6) 6-2. It was the first competitive match they had played against each. Amazingly Draper was on Centre Court as an 11-year-old  when Murray first won Wimbledon in 2013 and the pair have formed a good friendship over the years.

Draper was full of praise for the for the Scot after the match and told BBC Sport that Murray had been a huge inspiration in his career. The 21-year-old will now play World No 2 Carlos Alcaraz in the next round.

Elsewhere in the woman’s draw Emma Raducanu also reached the last 16 with an impressive win over Beatriz Haddad Maia. The 20-year-old beat the Brazilian world number 13 in three sets and will now play World No 1 Iga Swiatek.

It will only be the second time Raducanu and Swiatek have met in a competitive match after their meeting at in the Stuttgart Open last year. On that occasion Swiatek came out on top but the Brit demonstrated good ball striking moments to prove she can pose some problems for the Polish player. Swiatek is aiming to become the first woman’s player to defend the Indian Wells title since Martina Navratilova in 1991.
