Ashleigh Barty Retires from French Open to Leave Tournament Wide Open

Canada beat Australia in the final of the Davis Cup in Malaga to win the event for the first time in their history. They got off to a strong start as Denis Shapovalov beat Thanasi Kokkinakis in straight sets 6-2 6-4.

Top seed & World No1 Ashleigh Barty has been forced to retire from the French Open due to injury. Playing in her second round match against Magda Linette, Barty was wearing strapping on her left thigh and also required treatment during her first round match on Tuesday. She was visibly struggling with her movement and unfortunately was forced to retire after losing the first set 6-1.

Following Naomi Osaka’s withdrawal due to mental health issues on Monday, the woman’s tournament is now wide open with Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka now the top seed remaining at the Paris Grand Slam.

Barty will be now be hoping she will be fit for the grass court season which culminates with the Wimbledon Championships due to begin on 28th June in London.
