Heartache for Great Britain in Billy Jean Cup

Great Britain were unable to capitalise on their encouraging run to the semi final of the Billie Jean Cup. The Brits only qualified for the tournament by default as hosts of the event and therefore surprised a lot of people by reaching the semi finals. They were up against seven-times champions Australia for a place in the final.

Britain’s Heather Watson lost the opening singles match of the tie when she was beaten by Storm Sanders. There was encouragement in the next singles match when Harriet Dart levelled the tie by beating Ajla Tomlijanovic.

It meant the tie was resting on the deciding doubles match as Storm Sanders & Sam Stosur took on the British pair of Alicia Barnet & Olivia Nichols. After a tense contest it was the Australians who came out on top 7-6 (7-1) 6-7 (5-7) 10-6 to book their place in the final against Switzerland.
