Ruthless Djokovic claims 10th Australian Open as Sabalenka wins Ladies title

Novak Djokovic reigns supreme Down Under again as he won a record-extending 10th Australian Open on Sunday. The Wimbledon Champion beat Stefanos Tsitsipas in in straight sets 6-3 7-6 (7-4) 7-6 (7-5). The victory also brings him level with Rafael Nadal with 22 major titles.

The Serb is now reinstated at World No 1 and has not lost a match in the Australian Open since 2018. His amazing winning streak in Melbourne now spans an incredible 28 matches. He only dropped one set all tournament in the quarter finals against French qualifier Enzo Couacaud.

Djokovic will now look to the French Open which starts at the end of May where he will look to overtake his great rival Nadal in the all-time Grand Slam rankings. The Spaniard has been the King of Clay in Paris over the past decade but recent injury issues will mean Djokovic will believe he can win a third Roland Garros win.

In the woman’s draw the fifth seed Aryna Sabalenka won her maiden Grand Slam title. The Belarusian recovered from losing the first set against Wimbledon Champion Elena Rybakina 4-6 6-3 6-4.

The match was a thrilling contest between two excellent ball strikers. After the victory Sabalenka said she was hoping to play at Wimbledon this summer. Russian & Belarusian players were banned from the All England Club in 2022 due to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. It is not yet known if players from these countries will be allowed at SW19 this year.
