Monte Carlo Masters kicks off the clay court season

The world of tennis turns its attention to the clay court season as the Monte Carlo Masters begins in the south of France. The tournament is considered a prestigious event in the calendar which is helped by its magnificent setting at the Monte-Carlo Country Club.

Former World No 1 Rafael Nadal has won the competition on a record 11 occasion with a staggering eight successive titles between 2005-2012. However, the 22-time Grand Slam Champion will be competing this year due to injury.

Wimbledon Champion and World No 1 Novak Djokovic will be hoping to claim the title in Nadal’s absence. He is likely to face stern competition from Spanish teenage sensation Carlos Alcaraz who has been in impressive form this season.

The clay season culminates in the French Open at Roland Garros which starts at the end of May.
