Nadal through to last 16 in Madrid

22-time Grand Slam Champion Rafael Nadal marched into the last 16 of the Madrid open after beating Argentina’s Pedro Cachin 6-1 6-7 (5-7) 6-3.

Nadal is a five-time champion at the competition and has announced that this will be his final year in the sport. The 37-year-old Spaniard will now play Jiri Lehecka of the Czech Republic in the next round for place in the quarter finals.

Top seed Jannik Sinner is aiming to capture a fourth title of the year. He knocked out Russian Pavel Kotov 6-2 7-5 to continue his impressive form in 2024.

There was disappointment for Britain’s Cameron Norrie after he was beaten in straight sets by Casper Ruud. The Norwegian has been in good form recently and won the Barcelona Open last week.
