Alcaraz beats Norrie in the final of the Argentina Open

British No 1 Cameron Norrie lost in straight sets against Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz in the final of the Argentina Open on Sunday. Norrie was aiming for his fifth ATP title but couldn’t manage to beat the top seed in Buenos Aires and lost 6-3 7-5.

19-year-old Alcaraz was playing in his first tournament in 2023 after a four-month lay-off. The Spaniard won his first major title last year after claiming the US Open in New York. His victory at Flushing Meadows also propelled him to World No 1.

The top spot is now occupied by Novak Djokovic after the Serb won a record extending 10th Australian Open in January. Djokovic equalled Rafael Nadal’s total of 22 Grand Slams with his victory and Melbourne. This week he also equalled Seffi Graf’s record of the most amount of weeks as World No 1. The Wimbledon Champion has now held the number one ranking for an incredible 377th weeks.

Alcaraz is now 590 points behind Djokovic in the rankings and will be hoping to build on his performance with his hamstring injury now seemingly behind him.
