Carlos Alcaraz successfully defended his Wimbledon crown on Sunday beating Novak Djokovic in straight sets at the All England Club.
After they shared a titanic five-set battle 12 months ago, this year was a different story. Djokovic was hoping to add to his incredible 24 Grand Slam titles but struggled to cope with the young Spaniard. Alcaraz powered past his opponent to win the match 6-2 6-2 7-6 (7-4).
In victory Alcaraz emulated his fellow countryman and hero Rafael Nadal by winning Roland Garros & Wimbledon in the same year. Nadal achieved this feat in 2008 & 2010.
Djokovic was aiming to equal Roger Federer’s of eight Wimbledon titles. At the age of 37 and with recent injury issues it is difficult to predict if he will lift the Wimbledon trophy again.
As the Wimbledon Championships finish for another year, attention will turn to the US Open at Flushing Meadows in New York. The final Grand Slam of the year will begin on Monday 26th August.
