Clay Master Nadal Wins 12th Barcelona Open Title

20-time Grand Slam champion Rafael Nadal needed every ounce of his clay court magic to overcome Stefanos Tsitsipas in the final of the Barcelona Open. It was a great contest with high quality tennis from both players. Nadal was trailing 4-2 in the opening set before battling back to win the opener 6-4. Tsitsipas then won a second set tie braker to level the match before the 34 year old Spaniard secured a thrilling deciding set after being forced to save championship point. It was the longest ATP Tour match of 2021 with Top seed Nadal winning 6-4 6-7 (6-8) 7-5.

After the match Nadal said, “It is an important victory for me. I think I have been increasing my level during the whole week and this victory confirms it. That’s important for today. To have the trophy with me here at home means a lot, but at the same time for the future.”

The victory was Nadal’s 87th ATP Tour title and his 61st on clay – extending his incredible unrivalled record on the surface. It will be a welcome confidence boost for the World No 2 with Grand Slams in Paris & Wimbledon coming up in the next couple of months.
