Recent developments at the top of the men’s tennis world rankings mean there is a possibility Rafael Nadal could end 2022 as world No 1. The man currently occupying top spot is Nadal’s countryman Carlos Alcaraz. The Spanish teenager has enjoyed a successful season which includes a maiden Grand Slam title at the US Open. However, he has suffered an abdominal injury in recent weeks which will likely rule him out of the remaining tournaments this year.
Nadal will rival Greece’s Stefanos Tsitsipas for the top spot. His great rival Novak Djokovic helped his cause by beating Tsitsipas at the Paris Open last week. It means it will depend on the outcome of the ATP Tour Finals in Turin on who will end 2022 as world No 1
The 22-time Grand Slam Champion must reach the final of the event after avoiding defeat in his three round-robin group matches. He can also reach the summit by winning the event if he goes either 2-1 or 1-2 in his group matches.
It will be slightly more difficult for Tsitsipas to become world No 1. The Greek 24-year-old will need to win the title and remain undefeated throughout the competition. It would be first time Tsitsipas has made it to the top of the world rankings so it would be a great accomplishment if he is able to achieve it. He would also become the first ‘year-ending world no 1’ to have never won a Grand Slam.
