World No 1 Iga Swiatek has been named the 2022 WTA Player of the Year. The 21-year-old has had an incredible season after rising to the top of the world rankings in April and remaining there for the rest of 2022.
Swiatek has added two Grand Slam titles to her trophy haul this year. She captured the French Open in June and ended the reign of Ash Barty’s reign as World No 1 after the Australin suddenly retired at the age of 25. The Polish star also racked up an outstanding 37-match unbeaten run between February and July. This was the longest undefeated stretch by a woman tennis player in 25 years!
In September Swiatek claimed her second Grand Slam of the year by winning the US Open title in New York. This was the first time a woman had won two major trophies in a year since Angelique Kerber in 2016.
Swiatek was named the WTA Newcomer of the year in 2020 and will certainly look at this year as a breakout season for her establishing herself as the No 1 player in the world. She will be hoping to add to her Grand Slam trophy cabinet in January when the Australian Open starts in Melbourne.
