Indian Wells underway in California

The ‘Fifth Major’ is underway at Indian Wells as the BNP Paribas Open hosts a number of the world’s best tennis players.

For some of the ‘old guard’ this may be the last opportunity they have to claim the title. World No.1 Novak Djokovic is entering the twilight of his career and is playing the tournament for the first time since 2019. He will be looking for revenge against Jannik Sinner who knocked him out of the Australian Open in January.

There has been further disappointment for Rafael Nadal who made a late call to pull out of the tournament due to injury. Fans were hoping to see the 22-time Grand Slam Champion in action for the first time since January. However, the Spaniard has been forced to withdraw from the event due to further injury problems.

Two-time Wimbledon Champion Andy Murray produced his best tennis of the year so far by beating David Goffin in his first-round match. Murray looked sharp throughout and served well to win the contest in straight sets 6-3 6-2.

Emma Raducanu has confirmed she will be play at the event. The 2021 US Open Champion is still on a comeback trail after suffering numerous injuries in the past 18 months. She will be hoping to hit some better form in California with the French Open & Wimbledon Grand Slams coming up in the next few months.
