Italy win first Davis Cup since 1976

Italy beat Australia in the final of the Davis Cup 2-0 to be crowned champions for the first time in almost 50 years in Malaga.

In the opening match of the contest, 22-year-old Matteo Arnaldi overcame Alexi Popyrin 7-5 2-6 6-4 which gained the Italians their first point.

Jannik Sinner was then in action after toppling world no 1 Novak Djokovic less than 24 hours prior. He put on a dominant display to dispatch of his Australian opponent Alex de Munaur 6-3 6-0 in straight sets.

The Italians will now secure the world no 1 spot and seem to be the most exciting team in the world at the moment. Amazingly 2021 Wimbledon finalist Matteo Berrettini was unable to secure a place on the Italian team. He was cheering his compatriots from the sideline but it shows the strength of the team that he was not selected.
