Kyrgios claims both singles & doubles titles at Citi Open

Nick Kyrgios made history at the Citi Open as he became the first person to claim both the men’s singles and doubles titles in the same year. The Australian beat Yoshihito Nishioka 6-4 6-3 in the final of the singles tournament in Washington on Sunday. He then returned to court the following day to win the doubles championship alongside Jack Sock.

The Wimbledon finalist had not won an ATP Tour title in three years but has been in excellent form in recent weeks. Kyrgios did not drop serve the entire tournament in Washington and was delighted to secure his first title since 2019; “to see where I was at last year to now, it’s just an incredible transformation” said the 27-year-old. He now moves up to 37th in the world rankings.

The victory will give Kyrgios confidence heading into the US Open which begins at the end of the month in New York. The Flushing Meadows tournament is the final Grand Slam of the year and will be played on the hard court surface.
