Murray through in New York but Raducanu’s reign ends in the first round

Two-time Wimbledon Champion Andy Murray has won his first-round match at the US Open. It marks the 10-year anniversary of his triumph in New York when he claimed his first Grand Slam. The 35-year-old beat 24th seed Francisco Cerundolo 7-5 6-3 6-3 to reach the second round.

The victory was Murray’s first straight sets Grand Slam win since 2017. He has been steadily climbing the world rankings since requiring hip surgery four years ago and was able to be seeded for the final major of the year. The Brit will now face American Emilio Nava on Wednesday.

Elsewhere there was disappointment for defending champion Emma Raducanu. The 19-year-old suffered a straight set defeat to France’s Alize Cornet. Last year Raducanu stunned the world of tennis by winning her first Grand Slam without dropping a set throughout the whole tournament. However, she has battled with injuries and poor form since then and her first round exit in New York was further evidence of her struggles.

Serena Williams announced that the US Open will be her final tournament before retiring from tennis. She won her first round match in straight sets 6-3 6-3 against Montenegro’s Danka Kovinic. The 23-time Grand Slam champion is now 40 years old and has been struggling with injuries in recent years. She will be hoping to achieve a fairy-tale farewell at Flushing Meadows where she has been crowned champion six times.

There was first round disappointment for Serena’s older sister Venus, who has won the US Open on two occasions. Venus was coy on her own future after suffering a 6-1 7-6 defeat to Alison van Uytvanck.
