Murray grinds down Berrettini at Miami Open

Two-time Wimbledon Champion outlasted Italian Matteo Berrettini to reach the second round of the Italian Open on Wednesday. The former World No.1 has struggled with form since the start of the year and there had been rumours that 2024 could be his last year in professional tennis. Nevertheless, Murray managed to conjure some trademark grit as he came back from losing the first set against the 2021 Wimbledon finalist.

In the Miami heat Berrettini complained of dizziness during the second set but was able to continue after treatment from the doctor. It was his first outing since the US Open in September after a string of injury problems. Murray fully capitalised on his opponent’s discomfort and went on to win the match 4-6 6-3 6-4.

After the match Murray singed off by writing on note on the courtside camera which read, ‘life in the old dog yet’.

Murray has enjoyed success at the Miami Open in previous years, winning the trophy in 2009 & 2013. He will be dreaming of one final shot of glory!
