Roland Garros prepares for the French Open without Nadal

The tennis world is getting ready for the second Grand Slam of the year which starts in Paris on Sunday. The French Open is the only major tournament played on the clay surface and is steeped in tennis history.

However, this year will be a strange occasion for tennis fans as 14-time Champion Rafael Nadal is absent due to injury. The Spanish great has dominated Roland Garros for the past two decades but has been struggling with injuries in the twilight of his career. The 22-time Grand Slam Champion has not played since getting knocked out of the Australian Open in January.

In Nadal’s absence, World No 1 Carlos Alcaraz will be regarded as the early favourite for the title who has been in imperious form in 2023. He will be looking to emulate his hero Nadal after claiming his maiden Grand Slam at the US last year.

However, Wimbledon Champion Novak Djokovic will be hoping to stop Alcaraz and claim his third French Open crown. The World No 3 would also move ahead of Nadal in the all-time Grand Slam standings by winning his 23rd major title on the French clay.
