Djokovic breezes into US Open third round

Canada beat Australia in the final of the Davis Cup in Malaga to win the event for the first time in their history. They got off to a strong start as Denis Shapovalov beat Thanasi Kokkinakis in straight sets 6-2 6-4.

23-time Grand Slam Champion Novak Djokovic demolished Spain’s Bernabe Zapata Miralles to reach the US Open third round in New York. The second seed dropped only six games in a dominant match to prevail 6-4 6-1 6-1.

The conditions in the Big Apple were extremely humid and muggy which proved testing for the players. Nevertheless the 36-year-old Djokovic proved his fitness levels are still incredibly high and showed some amazing tennis on the Arthur Ashe Stadium.

There was a shock result on the day as two-time Grand Slam finalist Stefanos Tsitsipas was knocked out by Swiss qualifier Dominic Stricker. 21-year-old Stricker is ranked 128 in the world and stunned the Greek in a gruelling four hour, five set contest 7-5 6-7 (2-7) 6-7 (5-7) 7-6 (8-6) 6-3. The Swiss youngster has now achieved his best performance at a Grand Slam after reaching the second round at Wimbledon in July.

2022 semi-finalist Frances Tiafoe also advanced into the third round with a dominant display against Sebastian Ofner 6-3 6-1 6-4. He will play France’s Adrian Mannarino in the next round.

The woman’s draw saw the return of a resurgent Caroline Wozniacki after she dispatched the 11th seed Petra Kvitova in straight sets 7-5 7-6 (7-5). It was a fantastic display as the former Grand Slam Champion is returning having retired in 2020.
