Djokovic breezes into US Open third round

23-time Grand Slam Champion Novak Djokovic demolished Spain’s Bernabe Zapata Miralles to reach the US Open third round in New York. The second seed dropped only six games in a dominant match to prevail 6-4 6-1 6-1.

The conditions in the Big Apple were extremely humid and muggy which proved testing for the players. Nevertheless the 36-year-old Djokovic proved his fitness levels are still incredibly high and showed some amazing tennis on the Arthur Ashe Stadium.

There was a shock result on the day as two-time Grand Slam finalist Stefanos Tsitsipas was knocked out by Swiss qualifier Dominic Stricker. 21-year-old Stricker is ranked 128 in the world and stunned the Greek in a gruelling four hour, five set contest 7-5 6-7 (2-7) 6-7 (5-7) 7-6 (8-6) 6-3. The Swiss youngster has now achieved his best performance at a Grand Slam after reaching the second round at Wimbledon in July.

2022 semi-finalist Frances Tiafoe also advanced into the third round with a dominant display against Sebastian Ofner 6-3 6-1 6-4. He will play France’s Adrian Mannarino in the next round.

The woman’s draw saw the return of a resurgent Caroline Wozniacki after she dispatched the 11th seed Petra Kvitova in straight sets 7-5 7-6 (7-5). It was a fantastic display as the former Grand Slam Champion is returning having retired in 2020.
