British No.1 Katie Boulter has claimed her first WTA 500 title at the San Diego open. After losing the first set she was able to beat Ukraine’s Marta Kostyuk in the final 5-7 6-2 6-2.
Boulter has now reached a career-high of 27th in the world rankings. She will be hoping for a further ranking boost at the Indian Wells tournament which starts this week. The 27-year-old was knocked out in the qualifying round in 2023, meaning she has little points to defend this year.
There is a chance her current form could secure Boulter a seeding for the upcoming Grand Slams at the French Open and Wimbledon. This would mean she would not meet another seeded player until the third round of the tournament. For example, in January she suffered a second-round defeat to 12th seed Zheng Qinwen at the Australian Open.
