Is Serena Williams planning a comeback?

23-time Grand Slam Champion Serena Williams has hinted she may not be retired after all! The American former World No 1 seemed to bow out of the sport at the US Open in August. The 41 year old was treated to a lavish send off in front of her home fans at Flushing Meadows in New York after she lost her third round match against Ajla Tomljanovic. Her emotional reaction to the standing ovation at the end of the match appeared to confirm her intentions to bring the curtain down on her illustrious career.

However, during a speech at a press conference in San Francisco Williams suggested she may make a return to the court and indicated the chances of a comeback were ‘very high’. Time will tell whether tennis fans will see Williams compete again.

The veteran has won a staggering seven Wimbledon titles and shares the record with Steffi Graf as the most consecutive weeks as World No 1 (186 weeks). She became the oldest winner of a Grand Slam trophy in 2017 when she beat her older sister Venus in the final of the Australian Open at the age of 35. There are many who consider her as the greatest female tennis player of all time.
