Andy Murray produced a determined display to comeback and beat Robin Haase at the Rotterdam Open first round. The former world No 1 said he was ‘pumped’ to be back on court having to withdraw from last month’s Australian Open after delivering a positive coronavirus test.
Murray displayed his trademark resilience as he fought back from losing the first set to clinch a 2-6 7-6 (7-2) 6-3 victory. The three-time Grand Slam champion played very limited tennis in 2020 due to injury and the pandemic and his win over Haase is his first tour-level victory since the US open last year.
He could face a difficult test in the next round with fourth seed Andrey Rublev a potential opponent. This should provide a good marker to see where Murray is in terms of his current level as he looks to make progress towards Wimbledon in the summer.
Elsewhere, fellow Brit Cameron Norrie continued his good form in 2021 with a victory over Georgia’s Nikoloz Basilashvili.
