US Open gets underway in New York

The final Grand Slam of the year has started at Flushing Meadows in New York. The tournament sees the return of Novak Djokovic who was prevented to play last year due to his Covid-19 vaccination status. The Serb has won the competition on three occasions and will be determined to regain the crown again this year.

On Monday Djokovic won his first-round match in devastating style beating France’s Alexandre Muller in straight sets 6-0 6-2 6-3.

Defending champion Carlos Alcaraz is the favourite to retain his title after his amazing victory at the Wimbledon Championships last month. The Spaniard gets his tournament underway against Germany’s Dominik Koepfer.

The defending woman’s champion is World No 1 Iga Swiatek. She beat unseeded Rebecca Peterson in her first-round match in straight sets 6-0 6-1. The Polish star also enjoyed going to Broadway to enjoy the Lion King after her victory.
